As expected, American Idol's Hollywood week would be more aptly named "Hell Week." The night featured plenty of sweat and tears, while many of the early favorites easily made it through to the next round.
Brett Loewenstern opened up the Hollywood round. The 15-year-old was visibly nervous but he quickly overcame his jitters. He smoothly and strongly sang "Let It Be" and the judges all had smiles on their faces. After he made it to the next round, Brett vowed that he was moving on from being a bully victim.
New Yorker Rachel Zevita came back almost as an entirely different person than how she appeared in the first round. The 22-year-old was confident and feisty singing "Warwick Avenue," and the judges seemed surprised and impressed.
Two parents with tear-jerking backstories also made it to the next round. James Durbin gave a powerful performance of the Beatles' "Oh! Darling," while Paris Tassan tackled "My Heart Will Go On." Although her version wasn't very special, she still made it to the next round.
Several of the 15 and 16-year-olds also continued to deliver. Early favorite Lauren Alaina seemed nervous during her rendition of "Unchained Melody." However, her soulful voice continued to impress the judges. On the other hand, Holly Cavanaugh pushed away her initial audition nerves and appeared more confident singing "When I Look at You." Jacee Badeaux took on "Bless the Broken Road" and Robbie Rosen sang "Moody's Mood for Love." Both made it through. Thia Megia easily made it through with a confident performance of "Summertime."
However, another young one, Victoria Huggins, didn't fair as well. The camera caught the overly confident 16-year-old looking toward Los Angeles mountains, saying, "Maybe people look at me like I'm looking at these mountains." Based on fellow contestants' reactions, her mom seemed to be her biggest fan.
Casey Abrams was one of the contestants who was notably, surprisingly, even better and comfortable on stage. The Seth Rogen look-alike sang his jazzy rendition of "Lullaby of Birdland" and the judges went along with his beat, loving every moment of it.
Ex-couple Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks and couple Nick Fink and Jacqueline Dunford provided the episode's real drama. The four were put together in the hotel to bond, and Rob really looked uncomfortable. However, he did a moving, heart-felt rendition of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Rob, Chelsea, and Jacqueline all made it through to the next round while Nick didn't. Nick and Jacqueline have difficulty parting with each other, and Nick even begged the judges to no avail.
