Madison County investigators say Rashad Riddick was arrested Sunday evening in Newport News and charged with three counts of capital murder in the brutal slayings of three Madison County residents. The Madison sheriff's office said he was driving a pick-up truck stolen from one of the victims.
Riddick, 23, was arrested without incident at a hotel in the Hampton Roads area, police said. Investigators from Madison County are on their way to Newport News to interview Riddick on Monday.
Madison County Sheriff Erik Weaver identified identified the victims as 54-year-old James Clark Jackson, 53-year-old Karen Lee Jackson and 26-year-old Chantel Davis. James Clark and Karen Lee Jackson were married, and Davis was Karen's daughter.
Weaver said the entire family was killed, and there are no other surviving immediate family members. The sheriff's office is looking for a person of interest in the slayings, whom they have not identified.
"Pretty much wiped out the entire family," Weaver said. "In a rural community, this may be all the family they had, and now they're gone. That's it."
The victims' bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office in Manassas, and an autopsy will be conducted Monday.
Weaver emphasized the importance of finding a copper 2004 Chevy Colorado pickup truck with Virginia tags YFM 4581. The truck belonged to James Clark Jackson, and police believe their person of interest took the truck after the shootings.
"Find the truck, that's gonna solve a lot of our questions that we have right now," Weaver said.
Neighbors of the Jacksons say the area off Route 15 in Madison County is typically quiet.
"You don't really hear anything happening back here," neighbor Rashad Bolden said. "It's a really quiet neighborhood, peaceful. So, it's kind of shocking."
As the family and community recover from Saturday's events, the sheriff vows to get answers.
"We're going to do everything we possibly can to find the person or persons that caused this terrible tragedy," Weaver said.
