BYU coach hopes to keep Brandon Davies in the program

Brigham Young officials said Wednesday that Brandon Davies' violation of the school's honor code -- which earned him a suspension for the rest of the season -- was not criminal in nature.
Davies was the Cougars' leading rebounder and third-leading scorer prior to his suspension Tuesday.
BYU coach Dave Rose said Davies is handling his dismissal from the team "the way it should be handled," and praised the 6-9 sophomore for having "his heart in the right place.
It was Rose's first time speaking publically about Davies' situation. His comments came after the No. 3 Cougars were held to a season-low in points at home in an 82-64 loss to New Mexico.
"I think the most important thing the fans need to know is Brandon did the right thing," Rose said on the BYU radio network. "He made a mistake, but the way he handled it is the way it should be handled."
Rose thinks its possible the team's leading rebounder could return next year.
"There are a lot of things that have yet to be determined as far as the unviersity and administration is concerned," Rose said. "I know his heart is in the right place. He's a great young man. I hope we can keep him in the program. He feels really bad for the fact that this his happening at this time."
BYU's honor code requires students to live a chaste and virtuous life, be honest, abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse, and attend church regularly.
"He was a real big key for us, a great teammate, great friend," said junior forward Noah Hartsock. "When you lose someone like that at this point in the season, it kind of throws you off. We wish him the best."
Hartsock said the team was told of Davies' suspension at practice Tuesday. Of winning at San Diego State and then having the Davies situation, he said:
"It's a roller coaster of emotion. ... It's hard to explain. We knew it was going to be a big loss. We miss his points and his rebounding. Just his presence on the court makes a big difference for us."
