The huge blowout spectacle that is typically the Super Bowl halftime show was more of the big production many fans have come to expect. This year’s headliners, the Black Eyed Peas, made the most of their moment on one of the more elaborate set designs seen in some time.
The pop megastar quarter’s stage set was straight from the future, and the extremely busy prop stage revealed itself to be more than what the eye could detect. The stage was shaped in the form of the high end headphones from producer Dr. Dre Beats By Dre. After ascending from the sky on what seemed to be mini flying saucers, the black and silver clad Peas ran through their entire set of hits, opening with the 2009 smash “I Got A Feeling.”
Next up came “Boom Boom Pow” and a flood of brightly dressed and well lit dancers joined the crew and they kept themselves pretty subdued save for Fergie, who was clearly more animated than the guys. Milking her moment for all she could, surprise guest guitarist Slash joined the fracas appearing in his signature top hat but this time, his trademark got the futuristic brush swipe as well. Fergie joined alongside Slash for a moment of grandstanding before second surprise guest Usher came out to perform his smash “OMG” to the delight of the pigskin partyers.
After running through a few more of their hits, including their most recent single “The Time (Dirty Bit),” the crew went back to their opening cut before heading off in a blaze of fog, laser lights and glory.
