'Confession' app targets sinners

For mobile Catholics seeking forgiveness, confession is as close as their iPhones.
"Confession: A Roman Catholic App," from a company in South Bend, Ind., spurs spiritual self-examination with a checklist of sins. The user selects the applicable sins, prays for forgiveness and then goes to a priest for counseling and absolution.
It has the approval of Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, but church officials say it's an aid to confession, not a substitute. "It's meant to guide you through the process," said the Rev. Jason Freiburger, his vice chancellor. "Hopefully, it will attract more people to the Sacrament of Penance."
South Florida's two bishops, in Miami and Palm Beach, haven't commented on the $1.99 app. "Even for a non-Catholic, self-examination might be good," said the Rev. Bob Tywoniak of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Oakland Park. "It can help you reflect, meditate on life."
