DH assignment gives Jeter half-day of rest

BALTIMORE -- Jorge Posada's return to the designated-hitter spot lasted just one day. Derek Jeter took his buddy's place in the lineup on Wednesday night, getting a half-day against the Orioles.
"Against the lefties, I can kind of give my righties a half-day and get them off their feet a little bit," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Posada got back into the lineup as a DH on Tuesday against the Rays, going 2-for-3 in New York's 6-2 victory at Tropicana Field, but his at-bats have been much better left-handed than right-handed.
The 39-year-old switch-hitting Posada -- who asked out of the lineup on Saturday against the Red Sox after being dropped to the No. 9 spot -- is hitless in 24 at-bats against lefties this season. He is hitting .179 with six homers and 15 RBIs overall.
Girardi wouldn't rule out playing Posada against another lefty -- the Orioles started southpaw Zach Britton on Wednesday -- but he could also use Andruw Jones as a DH, along with his other veterans.
"It depends how long of stretches we're in," said Girardi, whose club won't have an off-day until May 26. "That's the hard thing. We're in some long stretches, and it's just kind of a way to give them a half-day."
