Freshman's breakout game lifts Stanford

Making his first start, freshman guard Anthony Brown gave every indication he plans to stay in the Stanford lineup Saturday night.
He scored a season-high 21 points, added eight rebounds and played a strong all-around game as the Cardinal broke a four-game losing streak by beating Oregon State 70-56 at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford (11-9, 4-5 Pac-10) shook off their recent shooting slump by hitting 25-of-50 shots from the field. The Cardinal had been held under 60 points in their seven previous games.
Josh Owens had 14 points and eight rebounds after being held to four of each by Oregon on Thursday night.
The Beavers (8-12, 3-6) were led by Ahmad Starks with 17.
Leading by one at the half, the Cardinal surged as Brown and Owens scored on putback, Jarrett Mann drove for a layup, and Owens scored from the inside. Brown stole the ball and drove for a dunk that put Stanford ahead 41-35. The slam gave him a season-high 16 points, but he was far from done.
But the Cardinal couldn't put the Beavers away. The lead was 49-48 when Brown fed Owens for a dunk. Mann's jumper and a dunk by Jack Trotter opened a 55-48 lead. Brown converted a three-point play on a break, and Green hit a baseline jumper to finish an 11-2 run and widen the lead to 60-50.
Former San Leandro High star Jared Cunningham, the Beavers' leading scorer with a 14.3 average, didn't get his first point until a free throw eight minutes into the second half. It was his only point of the night.
Stanford, possibly breaking out of its shooting slump, sank its first five shots and took a 13-2 lead, its largest of the first half.
Jeremy Green hit a three and Brown, making his first start, swished two more as the Cardinal built the early lead.
The Beavers got back in the game behind the scoring of freshmen Devon Collier and Starks. Starks, a 5-foot-8 guard, made a steal and drove for a basket that tied the score at 20 with 7:06 left in the first half.
Stanford freshman forward John Gage, who had played just 38 minutes in the first 19 games, played the last eight minutes of the first half. He hit a three from the corner - just his second trey of the season - to put the Cardinal up 23-20.
The Cardinal briefly employed a rare zone defense and forced the visitors into a shot-clock violation, but a Starks three pushed the Beavers in front 25-24. Gage got a favorable bounce on another three for a 27-25 lead, only to see Lathen Wallace bag a three, then hit two foul shots, putting OSU back in front 30-27.
Mann's foul shot and Brown's third three of the half gave Stanford a 31-30 halftime lead.
Briefly: The Cardinal play two more home games this week, against Arizona on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Arizona State on Saturday at 3. ... Brown took Aaron Bright's place in the starting lineup, with Mann playing point guard. ... The Beavers entered the weekend leading the nation in steals with 10.3 per game. ...They also came in with a 1-6 road record.
