Updated: Northwestern comes up just short against No. 1 Ohio State, 58-57

Carmody: 'I'm disappointed as hell'
Northwestern dropped a heartbreaker to the number 1 team in the country Saturday night, losing to Ohio State 58-57 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
A free throw by Ohio State freshman phenom Jared Sullinger with 3.5 seconds left gave the Buckeyes the narrow win. Sullinger had 21 points and 8 rebounds.
The Wildcats were playing without junior forward John Shurna, who suffered a concussion at Minnesota earlier this week. Senior guard Michael Thompson led the Cats with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Shurna's replacement, senior forward Mike Capocci, who only played 24 minutes, finished second on the team with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
For a team that hardly turns the ball over, an offensive miscue doomed the Wildcats on Saturday. With 16 seconds left and the score tied, David Lighty picked off an Alex Marcotullio pass intended for JerShon Cobb. On the Buckeyes' ensuing possession, Sullinger put in the game-winning free throw, giving top-ranked Ohio State the victory.
"On that last play we just wanted to get a shot and we didn't get a shot," coach Bill Carmody said. "I'm disappointed as hell."
Following Sullinger's free throw, sophomore forward Drew Crawford missed a long three as the clock expired.
The Cats relied heavily on the long ball Saturday, putting up 30 attempts from beyond the arc. Thompson took 11 of those threes, making four. Meanwhile the Buckeyes, one of the best three-point-shooting teams in the conference, only took eight threes.
The Cats shot 38.5 percent from the field. More than half of their shots came from beyond the arc, where they shot 30 percent (9 of 30). NU did out-rebound Ohio State, especially on the offensive side.
