Hawaii approves same-sex unions

The Hawaii Legislature approved a bill Wednesday allowing civil unions for same-sex couples. Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie's office said he intends to sign the bill within 10 days, and civil unions would begin Jan. 1, 2012.
The bill's passage came after years of large rallies, election battles and passionate public testimony.
West Virginia arrest attempt
U.S. marshal, drug suspect die in shootout
One of three deputy U.S. marshals who were shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in West Virginia died, and a drug suspect also was killed in a shootout, authorities said Wednesday.
It happened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday as deputy U.S. marshals entered a residence in Elkins, U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Dave Oney said. The suspect, Charles E. Smith, 50, was wanted on cocaine charges.

Gunmen knew they were shooting law officers
Gunmen who shot up an SUV carrying two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, killing one, knew they were attacking law enforcement officers, according to U.S. officials.
But details of the attack that emerged Wednesday indicate the two agents were not targeted ahead of time, rather stopped in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Special Agent Jaime Zapata, 32, died and Agent Victor Avila was wounded Tuesday when they were attacked after being stopped in northern Mexico.

Brown details sexual, physical abuse as child
Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., has revealed he was sexually abused as a child several times by a camp counselor and has detailed physical abuse by a stepfather. Brown made the revelations in an interview to air Sunday night on the CBS program "60 Minutes" and details the childhood trauma in a new book, "Against All Odds."

Pirate apologizes: A Somali pirate who kidnapped and brutalized the captain of the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama in 2009 was sentenced Wednesday in New York to more than 33 years in prison. Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse, who had pleaded guilty, apologized before being sentenced.
